Virtual reality headsets are easy to find. Many mobile companies have their own version, as do Google and Facebook. This type of gear is getting increasingly comfortable to wear and good at projecting VR content, unlike the accessories that come with it. Either they’re completely missing or the controllers those come with are enabling functions, not feelings. So, one start-up made its personal mission to give users the sense of touch during a VR experience; the team developed VRgluv, a virtual reality glove #realitymagic
While VR headsets are all a user needs for a visual (and even audio) experience, the truth is such a world cannot exist without touch. The ability to feel texture and sense the shape of an object is equally important. The guys from VRgluv aren’t the first to have realised that and done something about it; researchers from Stanford University worked on a prototype with force feedback in the fall of last year, called Wolverine. The device’s main perks were its lightweight, lowcost form but since then, we haven’t seen it on the market.
On the other hand, the developers from VRgluv claim that their glove will be available this month. What’s so special about this accessory? Well, it seems that VRgluv comes with complete hand tracking, including your fingers. Your virtual hands will always follow the position and angle of your entire arm. The haptic glove with force feedback will enable you to feel the objects you touch in VR by recreating their form.
Plus, each finger has its own force sensor so you’ll be able to tell if an object has a soft or a hard surface. Once you get a sense of that, you can use the glove to crush it, if the experience allows you to.
Best of all, the accessory from VRgluv should match your headset just fine, since it was made to be compatible with all high-end headsets.
