The last mainline Crash Bandicoot to release was over 20 years ago in 1998. Then it makes sense that it’s about time for Crash Bandicoot 4.
Announced today at a Summer Game Fest stream, Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time was a triumphant return of the Crash Bandicoot series to the gaming landscape.
Although short, the trailer showed a little of what players could expect when with the graphics and gameplay updated for to match the 21st CE. For example, gamers can expect a platforming challenge the original games are known for but adding a layer of new mechanics like reversing gravity and multiple jumps. The worlds also seem incredibly vibrant, ranging from a Jurassic volcano scene to a futuristic city.
In an interview with Engadget, developers of the game Toys For Bob noted that Crash Bandicoot 4 is supposed to be set right after the original three games given the success of the N. Sane Trilogy. Chief Creative Officer and Co-Studio Lead Paul Yan additionally noted that the focus on these three games allowed the development team to go back to the series’ roots of “tight, challenging platforming.”
Yet the team also pushed to modernize the game, adding Quantum Masks that allow for the special mechanics seen in the trailer. Additionally, there will be more playable characters than just Crash, including Coco and Neo Cortex.
Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time releases on October 2, 2020 for both PS4 and Xbox One. It is available for preorder and digital purchases will get special “totally tubular” skins.
