World’s fastest gaming monitors were left in the dust this week as one display manufacturer unveiled an unbelievable 500Hz Chinese prototype monitor.
BOE, one of the world’s leading display panel manufacturers, announced an “important breakthroughs in the field of oxide semiconductor display technology”. This referred to a prototype monitor with a crazy refresh rate of 500Hz!
That is almost double the speed of a esports gaming monitor right now. If you ask around, the fastest ones on the market will go no farther than 360Hz. That means it will refresh the image 360 times every second.
The new device from BOE is capable of doing the same thing 500 times/second. But is it overkill? Since graphic cards would need to send it a frame every 2 miliseconds to take advantage of its prowess?
Possibly.
Even though the prototype might not come to market soon, it would advance the technology greatly. At the moment, not much is known about the method used to achieve this number.
If we look at the translation of the original announcement, which was posted in Chinese, we can discern a mention of “low power oxide display technology,” and “mass production of copper interconnect stack structures.”
What’s interesting is a mention of a “high resolution” monitor which is surprising considering today’s 360Hz monitors can only give you a low 1080p resolution. Nonetheless, this shows why gaming monitors always have high refresh rates. This feature offers a significant advantage for online games.
Stay tuned for more updates regarding BOE’s curious prototype.
