Oppo’s Find X5 Pro is definitely a device that defines the company. Oppo has innovated its smartphones with each release and this time, it has added a new ceramic back to the Find X5 line.

In addition to that, the new device is smoother than its predecessors. The company took inspiration from nature, where, it says, we rarely find straight lines and sharp corners. It adapted a fluid design for the Find X5 Pro and focused on the back of the device in particular, stating that “most rival handsets tend to bolt on unsightly camera bumps almost as an afterthought, making them appear separate from the device itself.”
You might ask why this is significant and the answer is that, while the design doesn’t seem that hard to achieve, it is a bit difficult when trying to manufacture it out of ceramic. It’s not an easy material to work with, at least in the smartphone industry and, while there are a few devices out there that have ceramic backs, they are the minority.
That is mostly because ceramic is not as easily formed as glass and tends to shrink once heated, which does not always result in the exact dimensions needed.
However, a ceramic back is highly desirable: it has a fingerprint-resistant texture, is stronger and can dissipate heat better than glass.
So Oppo got to work and started finding solutions to all the issues ceramic introduced during the manufacturing process.
The Find X5 Pro’s ceramic back has been hot forged at 1,000 degrees Celsius and, in order to make sure its dimensions were precise, the company used CNC machines to carve the material, with over 2,000 control points that ensured the curves stayed fluid.
After this process, the lines left by the carving machine had to be smoothed out, which required a multi-stage polishing process, fulfilled by a four-axis polishing machine.
This device uses micron-level diamond powder to smooth out the ceramic with a precision of up to 0.005mm. According to Oppo, the entire process for one back cover takes five days to manufacture.
The company worked around six months on molding, machining and polishing just to figure out the right way to make it happen, and make it happen they did – the result is a sleek-looking device that is more durable and more interesting to look at than most.
To round it up, the device has a 6.7 AMOLED LTPO screen with a QHD + resolution, and comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage.
It has a triple camera setup on the back consisting of a 50MP main snapper, a 13MP telephoto lens and a 50MP ultrawide. The selfie snapper is a 32MP. Camera features include Hasselblad Color Calibration, LED flash, HDR, panorama, 4K video and more.
The phone has a 4,700mAh battery with 50W wireless charging and a graphene cooling system that dissipates heat efficiently.
The Oppo Find X5 Pro is available via the company’s website or Amazon with a price tag of around $1,621. While that does sound like a steep price, at least now you know more about why it has such a price tag attached to it.
