Uber Express POOL, the service tested in San Francisco and Boston in November 2017, is now arriving to new cities.
The Uber program was expanded to DC, Los Angeles, Miami, Philadelphia, Denver and San Diego, with more cities to follow in the next few weeks.
What is Uber Express POOL?
It’s a new way to share rides, designed to eliminate a lot of the small inconveniences currently experienced by both Uber drivers and riders. Riders will now order an Uber Express POOL and have to complete a few small tasks. They’ll have to wait a few minutes before the trip starts, so that the algorithm can better optimize the driver’s route.
Or, if they don’t want to wait, they will have to walk to a nearby pickup. This allows the driver to have a straighter line for his route, so more riders can enjoy lower fares.
Currently, the Uber Express POOL is available in the app, right next to the classic POOL option, but in the future, it could remain the only option.
Seeing the reasoning behind it (lower fares and less frustration), we think it has a good chance of working.
It forces riders to do a little walking, but it will also lower gas usage and be more competitive with public transportation. Here’s what the new Uber CEO had to say about it:
Uber Express POOL coming Greg. U may have to walk a block or two but we are optimizing drive and walk times to save time for everyone. #comeback https://t.co/YMYpLhBl8f
