More features are coming to Apple Wallet! The ability to carry a digital driver’s license is one of them and now, Apple has updated the release date of this new feature.
Apple has been working with several US states since iOS15 debuted to allow and encourage the use of Apple Wallet to identify oneself. The partnership was going to become reality by the end of the year, in these US states.
However, we’re nearing December and Apple Wallet hasn’t been upgraded in this simple and useful manner. It seems that the project is still a work in progress, as was revealed by the latest update of Apple’s iOS 15 information page.
This means many Americans will be able to scan and keep their drivers’ licenses in the iPhone Wallet app starting with 2022. By then, this will be recognized as an official identification method throughout the states, as well as in airports and at the TSA. The eight U.S. states that showed an interest in the project in September have been joined by Florida in the meantime.
How will it work?
After scanning the official document, you’ll be asked to take a selfie to confirm your identity and move your head to enrol, like in a biometric registration process.
In Apple’s words, “the customer will then be asked to use their iPhone to scan their physical driver’s license or state ID card and take a selfie, which will be securely provided to the issuing state for verification. As an additional security step, users will also be prompted to complete a series of facial and head movements during the setup process. Once verified by the issuing state, the customer’s ID or driver’s license will be added to Wallet.”
After the setup process, you will get access to these documents within the Wallet app only by using Face ID or Touch ID – passwords won’t be enough. Can’t say I disagree – with this kind of sensitive information, it’s best to have airtight security.
