COVID-19 Vaccination Cards, Soon Accessible via Apple Wallet

With COVID-19 vaccinations on the way and the threat of a new variant on the horizon, more businesses will require proof of a vaccine before letting people access their services. To streamline the process, Apple has taken steps to ensure the COVID-19 vaccination cards will be easy to store and access from the company’s Wallet app.

In a future iPhone update, verifiable COVID-19 vaccination cards will be accessible via Apple Wallet. The feature will be supported by the international SMART Health Cards standard. Users will be able to sign it with a private key and create a public one to let others verify the health info.

Apple assures that all the info will be encrypted and securely stored before being transferred anywhere. The company itself won’t be able to access the card or see how it was used.

The info will be easy to share with “approved” third-party apps but on a one-time basis.

Until then, the recently released iOS 15 software update lets users store vaccination info and test results on iPhone. Those can be sent to the Health app through the same standard. There users will be able to check easily QR codes, save downloadable files and even open documents from healthcare providers that use Health Records for iPhone.
