Dangerous Mosquitoes? Photonic Fence Gets Rid Of Them With Lasers

As soon as summer arrives, annoying bugs and dangerous mosquitoes come out of nowhere. If you’re a freelancer, enjoying a day of work outside, this can be especially irritating. Moreover, it can become a problem of life and death in countries like India and Myanmar where malaria is in “full bloom“. So, scientists came up with a buzz killer, literally – the Photonic Fence #objectmagic

The brainiacs from Intellectual Ventures Lab invented a machine with lasers that spots insects and kills them in a matter of milliseconds, from as far as 30 meters. They called it the Photonic Fence and it’s easy to see why, if you take a peek at it.

The invention can see pesky insects thanks to an array of cameras and near-infrared light. Once the insects are identified, after form, velocity and wing beat speed, the ones that need to be eliminated disappears swiftly.

The Photonic Fence has the power to kill up to 20 insects/second. It’s more targeted and effective than pesticide. This summer, the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture will test it in Florida. The target? Wild mosquitoes. Soon, though, this mosquito repellent could be used on a larger scale, to prevent more malaria cases worldwide and protect crops.
