Elon Musk’s OpenAI Challenges Dota2 Pro Gamers Teams

OpenAI, Elon Musk’s AI non-profit, is back in the game and planning to defeat the best players at The International, the Dota 2 world championship.

Last year, OpenAI defeated Danylo “Dendi” Ishutin in a live 1-vs-1 match and this year plans to win against entire 5 man teams.

Right now, the OpenAI Five team of five neural networks is training against Dota 2 amateurs in anticipation of The International in August and the company says that it’s a tough challenge.

To beat a human player, OpenAI has to take an incredible amount of decisions in the shortest time possible.

“In Dota, each hero can take dozens of actions, and many actions target either another unit or a position on the ground. We discretize the space into 170,000 possible actions per hero (not all valid each tick, such as using a spell on cooldown); not counting the continuous parts, there are an average of ~1,000 valid actions each tick. The average number of actions in chess is 35; in Go, 250,” explains OpenAi.

However, it does have some weaknesses – the OpenA Five team prefers to obtain long-term map control and often falls behind in obtaining in-game gold by farming minions.
