The answer is probably no but that didn’t hinder Disney’s latest project. Instead, the force jacket has become one of their most creative yet unsettling creations.
This bizarre item, designed in partnership with scientists from MIT and Carnegie Mellon, can simulate physical sensations to accompany virtual reality experiences.
The Disney Force Jacket also has a longer, more ominous-sounding name: the “pneumatically actuated jacket for embodied haptic experiences that provide precisely directed force and high-frequency vibrations to the upper body.”
In plain English, that means you’re looking at a jacket filled with sensors that will control airbags to offer you different physical sensations. What kind of sensations? Disney mentioned the feeling of a hug, of a punch or of multiple snakes slithering all over your body.
While it may sound kind of creepy, the Disney Force Jacket makes sense when used during VR games. Right now it’s at the prototype stage but, with a few tweaks, it could become surprisingly popular with VR enthusiasts.
