Is this a great day for consumers or what? After Apple announced they’ll let and help anyone to repair their iPhones at home, potentially saving hundreds of dollars, now Tidal is free!
The company just announced the Tidal Free Plan, which, kind of like Spotify Free, “access to our entire music catalog and playlists, with limited interruptions.”
That means you’ll have to cope with some ads and the streaming quality capped at 160kbps but hey, free Tidal is Tidal free is awesome!
To keep their revenue stream, Tidal will also upgrade the standard paid plan with lossless, hi res audio.
The new Tidal HiFi plan will go to $9.99 per month and offer up to 1411kbps streaming, access to Tidal Connect and My Activity, plus offline capabilities.
For serious audiophiles, the company is introducing a new plan as well, called Tidal HiFi Plus.
Tidal HiFi Plus will cost $19.99 and boasts “best-in-class immersive sound formats” with Dolby Atmos and Sony 360 audio tracks, plus Master Quality Authenticated (MQA) recordings.
Even more, Tidal plans to better reward the artists that provide the music to its platform.
The company will launch monthly direct-to-artist payments to artists, where a percentage of HiFi Plus subscribers’ payments will be added to artists’ paychecks, in addition to their streaming royalties.
Plus, in 2022, “TIDAL is taking a different approach on royalties”.
“In this new model, royalties attributed to HiFi Plus subscribers will not be aggregated. Rather, royalties will be paid based on the actual streaming activity of individual HiFi Plus subscribers as opposed to the industry accepted method of aggregating streams, empowering fans to play a larger role in the success of their favorite artists,” said the company.
