Google is finally allowing users to stop seeing ads from categories that could negatively affect vulnerable people.
Users will be able to restrict ads about weight loss, pregnancy and parenting, or dating.
More importantly, those struggling with addiction and dependency will be able to see less alcohol and gambling ads whenever they browse online.
The new Google ad settings for sensitive ad categories will be available for both YouTube and Google Display.
While the settings don’t apply to the Google search results or Google Shopping items, a company rep told Engadget that they might be available in the future.
“Providing transparency and control has always been a priority for us so we’re expanding our tools, enabling the choice to see fewer pregnancy and parenting, dating, and weight loss ads. We’ll continue to listen to user feedback and study which categories to expand this feature to in the future,” said Karin Hennessy, group product manager for ad privacy at Google in a statement.
Hopefully that will happen soon and ads will have less of a negative impact on people affected by body dysmorphia, eating disorders and alcohol or gambling dependencies.
