Remember when phone phreaking was a thing? If you’re too young to have been a teen or adult in the 90s, then this movie will be a fascinating insight into the world of hacking.
John “Captain Crunch” Draper is one of the most influential hackers / technologists in the world. He even worked alongside Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, the founders of Apple, to create phone-hacking boxes.
Back when you could hack a phone line using only a toy whistle to avoid paying for the calls, Draper was Apple’s employee 13 – hence the name of this full-length feature that’s currently seeking funding via Kickstarter.
However, his life story is a lot more interesting than that.
“What if inventions as big as the internet were envisioned before its time by a brilliant and divergent individual you’ve probably never heard of?
What if someone long overlooked is responsible for inspiring some of the most legendary names in Silicon Valley yet whose notoriety is, oppositely, more synonymous with scandal rather than success?
Employee 13 is an important new film project illuminating the intriguing life and influential achievements of John Draper, also known as “Captain Crunch,” a hacker and inventor with autism”.
The Employee 13 film is in pre-production right now but requires funds to go through with development.
As of writing, the team gathered around $4000 out of their $34,500 goal.
*Correction: In an earlier version of this story we said Employee 13 is a documentary. As it was brought to our attention by a Mayet Media representative, Employee 13 is actually a full-length feature film.
