Mediatek Unveils World’s First Mobile Chipset with Integrated 5G Modem

Mediatek has a great announcement today for those who really care about slim profiles on their phones – the world’s first mobile chipset with an integrated 5G Modem.

This is a new 7nm System-on-a-Chip (so-called SoC) that, unlike other solutions, includes the 5G on the same chip. That will translate into occupying less space inside the smartphone and possibly consuming less power.

Mediatek’s 5G-enabled chipset is based on the Cortex-A77 CPU and Mali-G77 GPU from Arm and includes both the Mediatek-produced 5G modem and AI processing unit technology.

In terms of speed, this new Mediatek 5G chipset could offer up to 4.7 Gbps download and 2.5Gbps speed.

This is a bit less than Qualcomm’s promise and, along with the fact that it only supports sub-6GHz spectrum, could limit its adoption in the US, where telecom giants Verizon and AT&T use higher mmWave bandwidth.

However, the fact that’s it’s an integrated chipset and allows smartphone makers to save space makes MediaTek very confident.

“Everything about this chip is designed for the first wave of flagship 5G devices. The leading-edge technology in this chipset makes it the most powerful 5G SoC announced to date and puts MediaTek at the forefront of 5G SoC design,” said MediaTek’s president, Joe Chen.

You should expect to see the first wave of smartphones powered by this new 5G chipset in early 2020.
