In order to help their users decide what to watch and keep informed about the latest updates regarding their favorite shows, Netflix has started testing a new feature called ‘Extras’.
The feature can be found as an app in the Netflix mobile app. You will be able to see the new button named “Extras” if you are in the test group, since the tab is only visible to some users. The button is situated at the bottom of the screen, right between Search and Downloads.
Don’t despair if you don’t see it at first – if you are an Android user, the feature is in the “Coming Soon” section. There, not only trailers will await but also both photos and videos from Netflix shows.
The videos automatically play silently, but if you press the sound button, audio will be heard. This section used to be very News Feed-like, while now it feels more like Instagram Stories.
Previously, users would tap “Remind Me” to add shows to their list in the “Coming Soon” section. Now, the “Extras” section has changed this to display “Remind Me” for shows you currently watch, while those you want to add will feature on “My List”.
Users can also pass along recommendations to friends by using the sharing button which is also included in the app.
Netflix has obviously used the Instagram platform for inspiration and is looking forward to integrating more ideas from social media platforms in the near future:
“We are testing a feed of video extras in our mobile app to help fans connect more deeply with the titles they love and discover new ones to watch. These tests typically vary in length of time and by region, and may not become permanent.”
