Rebel Moon Trailer Out: Everything About the New Zack Snyder Sci-Fi Universe

Netflix has long flirted with the scifi genre but now they have their own mega-director attached to an exciting series.

Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon has a new teaser trailer and, based on the very few moments it shows, you can tell it borrows from every classic scifi series ever. And we don’t mean just the plot but also the cast: you’ll recognize beloved Game of Thrones and DC Universe actors.

“This is me growing up as an Akira Kurosawa fan, a Star Wars fan. It’s my love of sci-fi and a giant adventure. My hope is that this also becomes a massive IP and a universe that can be built out,” Snyder told Hollywood Reporter. If you look at what elements are involved, it’s easy to see success for this new scifi franchise.

What is Rebel Moon about? Zack Snyder’s new scifi movies

Rebel Moon is a scifi movie series in 2 parts, in the epic space opera category (think The Fifth Element), and features a star-studded cast.

Here is the official synopsis for the first Rebel Moon movie: A Child of Fire.

“When a peaceful colony on the edge of a galaxy finds itself threatened by the armies of a tyrannical ruling force, Kora (Sofia Boutella), a mysterious stranger living among the villagers, becomes their best hope for survival.

Tasked with finding trained fighters who will unite with her in making an impossible stand against the Mother World, Kora assembles a small band of warriors — outsiders, insurgents, peasants and orphans of war from different worlds who share a common need for redemption and revenge. 

As the shadow of an entire Realm bears down on the unlikeliest of moons, a battle over the fate of a galaxy is waged, and in the process, a new army of heroes is formed.”

The Rebel Moon story is written by Zack Snyder himself, alongside  Kurt Johnstad, who also worked on 300 and Atomic Blonde, and Shay Hatten, known for John Wick Chapter 3 and Army of the Dead.

Rebel Moon cast – plenty of familiar names

Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire will introduce an imperialistic universe controlled by a single planet (Mother World). With Mother World becoming more oppressive, one rebel will try to make a stand against their former leadership – Kora, played by Sophia Boutella.

Kora will be helped by a series of rebels played by big names such as Djimon Hounsou, Charlie Hunnam and Michiel Huisman. You’ll also recognize Staz Nair from Game of Thrones and Ray Fisher of Justice League fame.

Ed Skrein, another Game of Thrones alumni who played Daenerys Targaryen’s lover Daario Naharis in the early seasons, will here play Admiral Atticus Noble, the right hand of the tyrannical ruler of the Mother world.

Jenna Malone, who played one of the toughest warriors in the Hunger Games series, will also feature in Rebel Moon as a lethal warrior allied to Kora.

Another of Kora’s allies will be played by the excellent Doona Bae, one of the most popular South Korean actors known worldwide for Cloud Atlas, Jupiter Ascending and two excellent Netflix exclusives: the surprisingly fantastic zombie series Kingdom, and the cerebral scifi The Silent Sea.

Rebel Moon launch dates: you won’t wait long between installments 

With such a cast, Rebel Moon is shaping up to be one of the most promising scifi movies in 2023 but you’ll have to wait a bit until it hits your Netflix account.

Rebel Moon Part One – A Child of Fire will hit Netflix this holiday season and you can stream it with your family on Christmas, as it will be available starting with December 22nd.

That’s quite a while away but fortunately you won’t have to wait long between installments. Rebel Moon Part Two – The Scargiver will launch a few months later, in April 2024.
