Apple released the first beta of iOS 13.4, and according to 9to5mac,the update references to a new “CarKey” API. The feature could allow users to lock, unlock, and start their car with an iPhone or Apple Watch.
Owners of NFC-compatible cars could benefit from this and use their Apple device as a key. The new “CarKey” might be stored in the Wallet app, and users could be able to share the digital car key via the app to other Apple devices.
Using your phone as a digital key has already been introduced by some car manufacturers, but with a few limitations. For example, Hyundai’s digital key app is only available for Android and the app only works with the 2020 Sonata. Also, Volvo’s On Call app requires a vehicle with a “Volvo on Call Telematics Unit.”
This being only the first beta of iOS 13.4, we still have to wait and see when the final version will come out and if CarKey will be included
