Nintendo Switch Beats Out Wii To Become Nintendo’s Best-Selling Home Console!

While it was almost inevitable, the Nintendo Switch finally sits as Nintendo’s best-selling home console of all time!

According to VGC, in the latest Nintendo financial results, the gaming company announced it had sold 103.54 million Nintendo Switch units as of December 31^st. This would mean that the Switch has surpassed Nintendo’s previous best-selling console, the Nintendo Wii, in terms of total units sold as the Will has sold 101.63 million units.

Although Nintendo has only sold 18.95 million Switch consoles this financial year (down 21.4% compared to the 2021 financial year), the numbers are overall still looking positive for the company. Given the semiconductor shortage as well as the intense popularity of Animal Crossing, the numbers from the previous financial year are certainly a bit skewed. At the same time, the Switch likely has several years left in its lifespan as the Nintendo Switch OLED just recently released meaning the numbers will likely continue grow.

Among all of Nintendo’s consoles, the Switch is the 3^rd best-selling console behind its handheld Nintendo DS (154.02 million units) and the Game Boy/Game Boy Color (118.69 million units). It is also behind the PlayStation 4 (116.6 million units) and the PlayStation 2 (155 million units).

Other interesting tidbits from the report:

Out of the 18.95 million units sold this financial year, the regular Switch model sold 11.79 million units, the Switch OLED 3.99 million, and the Switch Lite 3.17 million.
Software has sold particularly well in this current fiscal year as Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl leads the charge with 13.97 million. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe with 7.96 million copies (for a lifetime total of 43.35 million units) and Mario Party Super Stars (5.43 million units) follow.
Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa touched upon Nintendo’s current perspective on gaming acquisitions in light of recent Microsoft and Sony acquisitions. Furukawa wanted to keep Nintendo true to its particular style but did not dismiss the possibility of acquiring game companies in the future. (source: VGC)
