The Nintendo Switch has been thriving in 2020, in part because people are looking for things to do at home and games like Animal Crossing have become a global sensation. However, there continues to be a shortage of consoles given COVID-19 supply chain disruptions. Yet as the company is struggling to match the increased demand, Nintendo may be releasing an upgraded version of its heavily coveted console.
In a report by Bloomberg, Nintendo is planning to release an upgraded Switch model in 2021. While unclear how the console will be upgraded, the company has apparently looked into “more computing power and 4K high-definition graphics.”
If true, the upgraded Switch will address several of the major concerns of the current console. Computing power has been an issue as some newer games have trouble running on the Switch. 4K high-definition would also be an extremely well received update given that many see the Switch as visually a generation or two behind other consoles. This has been an issue in even some of the newer first-party like Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition, a game which handheld would run at 540p or lower.
Additionally, there may be new games released alongside the console to take advantage of its new specs. As Bloomberg’s sources tell the publication, the development of this upgraded Switch and the accompanying games “explains Nintendo’s relatively quiet software release schedule so far this year.”
Switch Pro rumors have circulated for a while, but these rumors have led to little. The last time rumors circulated about a new console it turned out to be the Switch Lite and an upgraded processor for the original Switch.
Although Nintendo still has several powerhouse rumored and announced games – Metroid Prime 4, Bayonetta 3, Breath of the Wild 2, Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword Remake, and Super Mario 3D Collection – an upgraded console could do a lot to keep Nintendo competitive as the other two major gaming companies look to release next-generation consoles this holiday season.
