As the FCC prepares to kill net neutrality protections, porn companies are fighting back. Pornhub and others will be part of the protest looming this month.
Reddit, Amazon, Mozilla will be joined by Pornhub, xHamster, Kink, Redtube and ManyVids in the “Battle for The Net” protest on July 12. Regular users won’t be pleased by the prospect of a slow day, but this is all done in the name of the greater good. It’s not clear how Pornhub will protest that day, but there are rumors that it just might show how many pent-up frustrations come to the surface when you’ve got nothing to relax to.
The fact is hundreds of sites are in danger of losing their audience if cable and wireless companies get control over what should make it to the fast lane of the Internet and what shouldn’t. The worse is probable – ISPs are likely to have favorites and direct traffic towards them.
Porn websites stand to lose much in terms of video traffic, especially with giants like YouTube and Netflix. But more than playing favorites, net neutrality could also mean the loss of freedom of speech and expression. Kink.com argues that by establishing what’s right and wrong to see, what’s important and not for users, “you’re telling people that some ideas and sexualities and identities are second-class, and you bring that shame back.”
