Satellite Constellation Starlink Should Be “Fully Mobile” by the End of 2021

Starlink

On Friday, Elon announced that SpaceX’s internet service Starlink will soon be “fully mobile” and successfully provide internet to people living in different parts of the planet, remote areas included.

“Yeah, should be fully mobile later this year, so you can move it anywhere or use it on an RV or truck in motion,” Elon Musk tweeted last week. “We need a few more satellite launches to achieve compete coverage & some key software upgrades.”

High-speed, low latency broadband internet

According to the company’s website, during the beta period, data speeds will vary from 50Mb/s to 150Mb/s, with latency from 20ms to 40ms. However, the latter will only apply for “the next several months as we enhance the Starlink system.” Even so, due to the specifics of Starlink satellites – which are 60 times closer to Earth than traditional ones – users will in lower latency. Lower latency represents the minimal delay in the processing of computer data over a network connection. This means that the lower the processing latency is, the smaller the delay times and the closer it is to real-time access.

However, the latter will only apply for “the next several months as we enhance the Starlink system.” Even so, due to the specifics of Starlink satellites – which are 60 times closer to Earth than traditional ones – users won’t have to suffer through high latency. 12.000 satellites will be used so that users will have access to high-speed internet, with the company expected to double the internet speed to 300 Mbps.

As more satellites are launched into orbit, uptime, data speed, and latency are expected to receive a significant improvement. In this case, the latter measures the time it takes for some data to get to its destination across the network, meaning that the lower the processing latency is, the smaller the delay times and the closer it is to real-time access for users.

“Service uptime, bandwidth & latency are improving rapidly. Probably out of beta this summer,”

Elon Musk added

SpaceX is an aerospace manufacturer and space transportation company founded by Elon Musk, which might soon complete its setup. Its broadband internet system, Starlink, is a satellite internet beta which has opened six months ago and now boasts more than 10.000 users. The internet service is expected to be introduced in India soon, with operations scheduled to start by next year.
