A job listing spotted online hinted at Spotify’s intention to launch their first physical product, most probably a smart speaker. #objectmagic
The news doesn’t come as a shock. After tech giants like Apple, Google and Amazon came with their own smart speakers and digital assistants, it’s no wonder that music services have picked up on the trend and are hoping to get a slice of the market. The first of them seems to be Spotify, which is currently looking for an ops manager to lead the new “connected hardware” line. The job listing starts with that major announcement, in fact: “Spotify is on its way to creating its first physical products”.
Since we are talking about music and physical products, a Wi-Fi speaker looks like a no-brainer. That said, there are so many on the market now, that even if it does carry the Spotify brand, it’s likely to pass unnoticed. So, odds are that the company is looking into smart speakers. Unlike tech companies, Spotify didn’t focused on machine learning in the past years to come now with its own smart assistant.
Therefore, we’re guessing they’ll just launch a speaker that supports Amazon or Google’s digital assistants. Even so, the team will still have to come up with a great marketing strategy and a couple of outstanding features to convince users of its importance in today’s AI landscape.
Will that be the beginning of a Spotify product ecosystem? We’ll have to wait and see!
