Matrix 4 might have received a lukewarm reception but the owners of this IP aren’t letting it go.
A new report in Deadline reveals the existence of a new Matrix movie, one with a surprising director attached. No, it’s not a Wachowski.
Drew Goddard will write and direct the new Matrix movie. Fortunately, he will get help from at least one Wachowski.
Goddard is known to scifi fans as the screenwriter of The Martian, and to the larger geekdom as the director of The Cabin in the Woods, Joss Whedon’s movie with a penchant for the meta.
Is that enough to make a good new Matrix movie? It’s a tall order, considering The Matrix is the essential tech movie. Only time will tell, although personally I’m super enthusiastic about this. Goddard was also the writer of Bad Times at the El Royale, a criminally underrated movie, and has also contributed to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which is only like the best series ever!
Lana Wachowski, who was co-writer and co-director on the original trilogy, is attached to the project as an executive producer.
What about the initial cast?
As Deadline rightly puts it, “it’s still early days in regards to whether core cast members Keanu Reeves, Carrie Anne-Moss, Laurence Fishburne, Hugo Weaving and Jada Pinkett Smith are coming back.”
Fingers crossed that it will happen, although new Matrix characters do have some potential to carry the torch. Also, to be honest, I’d rather they use the budget to convince Rob Dougan to come out of retirement and do the Matrix soundtrack again.

“Drew came to Warner Bros with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world, by both honoring what Lana and Lilly began over 25 years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series and characters,” said Jesse Ehrman, Warner Bros Motion Pictures President of Production. “The entire team at Warner Bros Discovery is thrilled for Drew to be making this new Matrix film, adding his vision to the cinematic canon the Wachowskis spent a quarter of a century building here at the studio.”
