Google’s censored engine and news app made for China has seen a lot of criticism ever since the news about it leaked, and not only from the general public but also from the Google employees themselves.
Now, the company seems to have found its biggest critic yet: the Trump administration.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Vice President Mike Pence gave a speech yesterday where he outlined first and foremost the White House’s frustrations with Beijing but also mentioned the fact that Google’s Chinese search engine would do nothing but “strengthen Communist Party censorship and compromise the privacy of Chinese customers.”
“For example, Google should immediately end development of the Dragonfly app that will strengthen Communist Party censorship and compromise the privacy of Chinese customers.”
He also widely addressed all the other companies out there to reconsider practicing their businesses in the country, especially if it means they have to turn over intellectual property and or just generally be “abetting Beijing’s oppression.
Even with the thousand of voices that went against it when information about “Dragonfly” came around, Google CEO Sundai Pichai has stated simply that the project was, at best, “exploratory” and “in the early stages”, in spite of the fact that the Google employees who were working on project have stated that they were preparing to launch the search engine as soon as the company got word from the Chinese government.
Perhaps now, facing its most powerful critic yet, Google might think twice about the project. So far, the company has not released a statement in response.
