Wizard Chess Is One Step Closer To Reality with Square Off

Indian company Infivention took to CES 2019 to show off the equivalent of wizard chess from Harry Potter: Square Off, a physical chess set designed for online play.

At first glance Square Off looks like a regular chess board but, to play, you only need to tap once on the piece you want to move then on the square you want it to move to.

That’s when the magic happens – the piece will move itself on the desired square, then another piece (your opponent’s) will move by itself. How does that work?

Square Off is actually Bluetooth connected to your phone and you’re playing with human opponents online. Because they’re not near you, the Square Off board moves pieces by itself, making it look just like the magical chess from the Harry Potter universe.

Square Off also offers “bot games”, allowing you to train against it in 20 levels of difficulty and review your moves on the dedicated phone app.

All in all, Square Off is definitely a game for the enthusiast and the price reflects that: this online chess set starts at $370 for the basic Kingdom set and goes to $445 for the Grand Kingdom set.
