The platform fighter scene may become a little more crowed as Warner Brothers is rumored to be investing in a platform fighter using characters from its expansive set of IPs.
Based on a Reddit report (via VGC) and “corroborated by journalist Jeff Grubb, developers of Mortal Combat Netherrealm is developing a Warner Bros cross-over platform fighter named “Multiversus.” Neatherrealm is owned by Warner Bros., making it a seemingly natural choice to develop the game in-house. Althought not with platform fighters, the studio does have experience developing fighting games in Mortal Kombat and Injustice.
The game is reportedly a new IP based on Smash Bros.-like mechanics. Apparently, the game came about after witnessing the success of Smash Bros. and after memes of “Ultra Instinct” Shaggy getting into Mortal Kombat flooded the internet. Warner Bros. was enthralled with the idea of having a crossover game with its IPs that could potentially take a share out of the Smash Bros.-led platform fighter market.
One unique element is that it would be a Tag Team game, although it is unclear if this “tag team” would play more like Smash Ultimate’s Squad Strike mode or like traditional platform fighter tag teaming.
Characters rumored to be in the game include Shaggy from Scooby Doo, Gandalf from Lord of the Rings, Tom & Jerry, Batman, Fred Flinstone, Mad Max, and Johnny Bravo. Harry Potter and Ron Weasley could also be in the game, but there may be issues with the rights.
Nickelodeon Legends Meet Platform Fighter In Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl
If true, Warner wouldn’t be the first entertainment company looking to use their own IPs in a game based on the successful Smash Ultimate formula. Nickelodeon recently teamed up with Slap City developer Ludosity to make Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl, a platformer fighter with characters from their iconic television series including Spongebob, Patrick Star, Aang, and Cat Dog.
Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl also clearly took a lot of inspiration from the mechanics of Super Smash Bros. Melee. The game focuses a lot of technical combos and mobility, to varying degrees of success.
If this report is true, it’ll be interesting to see what Warner Bros. brings to the table. Their IPs span a much larger range than Nickelodeon’s, leading to a crossover of character from a wide range of entertainment mediums. Also, Netherrealm’s particular skillset and experience may lead to a game which plays differently than any platform fighter yet released.
