Portal was one of the most revolutionary games of all time and its success had nothing to do with graphics – it was all mechanics and story. That’s why Portal would work great in almost any medium, including as an N64 ‘demake’.
And that’s exactly what we have here.
After a few years of development, programmer James Lambert launched the first part of Portal 64, a remake of Valve’s beloved game that’s fit for the classic Nintendo N64 console (hence the ‘demake’ monitor).
Now, you can play about two thirds of Portal’s test chambers and see how well the demake works. Spoiler alert: it’s pretty much perfect.
Even in the graphics of decades ago, Chell watching herself through portals is still a mind-bending, awe-inspiring experience.
Right now, Lambert made available the first 13 of the 19 Portal test chambers and also plans to do Portal: Still Alive, which has another 14 levels to it.
You can download the first slice of Portal64 from here.
