The Oculus Venues was announced in October 2017 and is now available for Oculus Go and the Samsung Gear VR. Using Venues, users can experience a concert, show, movies, or sports event, live from the comfort of your room.

To use Venues, Oculus users need to set up an Oculus account by downloading the app, available for both iOS and Android. The user is seated in a venue next to other users whose avatars they can see. There are also multiple viewing options and angles that can be toggled between.

Additionally, you can interact with other people and avatars. In your headset, you’ll be able to hear people talking and singing along to the music. Mutual Facebook interests also pop up on screen, creating an intimate bond between you and your virtual reality concert buddy.

Facebook offered the first free concert of the summer yesterday. Australian artist Vance Joy was broadcast live and worldwide at 7:30 p.m PST. While the first show had its issues, such as broadcast connection faults and pixelated images, the sound was pretty clear. Facebook is planning to add more live broadcasts to its Oculus Venues list, such as live sports and movies in association with Showtime and Lionsgate.

Public reception is currently mixed: some feel that seeing a live event via a VR headset might feel impersonal and quite removed from reality, in spite of the fact that it’s live. Others are just be grateful to be able to see their favorites live, no matter where they are.
