Today during the Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence, 2,400 signatures belonging to scientists who specialize in artificial intelligence have been added to a pledge that calls on governments to put in place norms, laws and regulations that outlaw the use of autonomous AI weapons.
Among those signatures we can recognize names that have and continue to pave the way for science and AI, such as Demis Hassabis from DeepMind and Elon Musk.
The pledge was put in place by the Boston organisation The Future of Life Institute. The pledge will be officially announced today during the International Joint Conference on AI that will take place in Stockholm.
The pledge comes soon after a few companies have been facing criticism over providing the government and the military with AI technologies, like it was the case with Project Maven.
You can read more about Project Maven here.
The pledge supports the idea that “the decision to take a human life should never be delegated to a machine.”.
Last year, Elon Musk and Demis Hassabis have also signed a Future of Life Institute letter that was delivered to the UN that asked for regulation of the use of autonomous weapons systems.
Though researchers can chose to not work on autonomous weapons, what happens to their published breakthroughs and how they are subsequently used is beyond their control.
