American Airlines is offering at-home COVID-19 tests to its fliers in the US, to help them meet various state travel restrictions, as some parts of the United States require a negative COVID test to allow people to enter. The airline is pairing up with LetsGetChecked, a direct-to-consumer home testing service, and will charge $129 on top of the cost of travel for the test.
Having a negative test result either before departure or upon arrival is the most common travel restriction currently imposed between states in the US. So this service might prove to be a lot of help for many passengers. American Airlines had already offered at-home tests for travelers heading to international destinations with restrictions, like the United Kingdom, Belize, and Chile.
LetsGetChecked advises travelers to order their tests at least five days before their flights, as the process takes a bit of time. After receiving their pre-flight kit, customers will have to take a nasal swab and send it back through the mail (using UPS) to be run through a PCR test.
Airlines are trying really hard to get people to return to the skies, as the pandemic hit the industry pretty hard. Delta Air Lines and Alitalia recently announced they will test passengers multiple times on flights from many domestic and international destinations.
