For the first time since 1995, Nintendo managed to surpass its arch-rivals Sony and Microsoft on the gaming consoles front.
The NES Classic, a tribute to the golden age of gaming, was the best-selling game console in June, a first since 1995, the year in which NPD tracking started.
Of course, the price point could be a big reason, since the cute NES Classic retails for only $59, while the PS4 and Xbox One go for more than triple the price. However, it’s clear that classic games can still outperform modern offerings.
The NES Classic packs a big nostalgic punch, coming preloaded with games like Donkey Kong, Super Mario Bros, Donkey Kong and several Legend of Zelda titles. If the console actually supported old-school cartridges, we’d not be surprised to see it at #1 in the following months as well.
US NPD HW – The NES Classic was June 2018’s highest unit-selling hardware platform, while the PlayStation 4 led the market in dollar sales. This is the first time a Nintendo Entertainment System console has led in monthly unit sales since NPD tracking began in 1995.

Clearly, the past two years have been Nintendo’s time to shine. The Nintendo Switch was selling like hotcakes too, even though it had a rocky, bug-ridden launch.
