This Tuesday, Samsung is going to reveal its first OLED stretchable display. Unlike a flexible one, this can be transformed from two sides, above and below, making it the most complex display on the market #mobilemagic
According to the Korea Herald, Samsung will be present at the Society for Information Display 2017 event at the LA Convention Center. There, the South Korean company will reveal a 9.1-inch stretchable organic LED panel. This information comes months after Samsung was first rumored to begin production of their foldable handsets this year. Unlike those, this time were talking about a pretty special display. Whether bended, curved or rolled, the stretchable OLED is said to be able to transform above and below.
Moreover, it will be extremely sensitive to touch. When pressed, it’s going to “inflate” 12 millimeters, only to revert to its original state in the absence of pressure. Even in those conditions, Samsung’s display should be able to maintain a high resolution. This adaptability is going to play in our favor in two ways: firstly, dropping our gadgets won’t be so anxiety-inducing because it will crack less, secondly, we’ll get to experience games and applications in a more creative manner, since this display will expand and shrink depending on the task.
Sounds good? I bet it does! This stretchable one could drastically change the design and functionality of IoT. Everyone knows it – analysts from IHS Markit predict that the global flexible display market will reach $15.7 billion in 2020. While, there’s no date in sight for a commercial launch, it’s safe to assume it will get to market in the following two years.
For now, make sure you keep an eye on tomorrow’s event to see the first pictures of the stretchable OLED display. Besides that one, Samsung is rumored to show off a second panel; a 1.96-inch UHD (3840 x 2160) display with a pixel density of 2250 pixel per inch.
