Microsoft Might Kill Its Most Daring Device Yet

Microsoft is having trouble advancing what many consider it’s most daring device yet. In fact, the company might end up killing it and focusing on other products and projects.

It seems that the mixed reality unit in charge of working on the HoloLens 3 isn’t quite sure how to proceed and this confusion might end up in the company ditching the project altogether.

According to a Business Insider report, the company has already lost faith in the HoloLens 3 product. Some of their sources say the headset’s ending is here and that the company has moved on to creating a new mixed reality device with Samsung’s help.

The engineers behind the HoloLens 3 are arguing about the priorities regarding the smart glasses, with 25 employees having left Microsoft for Meta last year.

Nobody even knows if the project should be business-focused or targeted at consumers, although it appears that Ruben Caballero, the man leading the device engineering for the HoloLens, is in favor of the latter.

While killing the HoloLens 3 makes sense, Microsoft spokesperson Frank Shaw firmly denied that the HoloLens is dead, thinking of it as “critical part of [the company’s] plans for emerging categories like mixed reality and the metaverse.”

Speaking of the metaverse, Microsoft’s interest in it is evident. In fact, when the company announced the Activision Blizzard acquisition for $68.7 billion, it stated that it would be essential for the advancement of the metaverse.
