One of the coolest projects at SXSW 2023? Dentsu’s lineup of “Unnamed Sensations”, which includes a machine that allows you to hug anyone in the world through haptic technology.
Our reporter Yue Xu tested the Dentsu’s Hugtics device at SXSW and, even though the prototype was prone to errors, she was impressed with the innovative concept.
What is Dentsu’s Hugtics?
It’s a scifi looking wearable that could help people feel companionship on a physical, not just intellectual level.

“Hugtics is a wearable device with artificial muscles woven into it. By wearing this garment and hugging a torso equipped with pressure sensors, hugging data is measured and fed back to the artificial muscles to create an unprecedented experience of giving yourself a hug,” explains the company.
At SXSW, Dentsu focused on using Hugtics as a device for hugging others, pointing out how it could provide another means of connection for alleviating loneliness – think senior citizens with family that lives far away.
The prototype might look a bit intimidating but, if Dentsu manages to put the technology into a more user-friendly package, there’s a lot of potential there.
