With many salons closing due to the pandemic and lockdowns keeping people at home over extended periods of time, home hair dying has become second nature. Despite the messiness of the process, there has been a raise in sales of DIY hair-coloring kits over the past two years. Now, L’Oreal wants to make everyone’s life easier with a hair dying… comb.
Just like straightening and curling irons help folks style their hair, the Colorsonic allows them to dye their strands simply and easily at home.
The device is made of a nozzle that goes back and forth in a zig-zag pattern 300 times per second, ensuring quality, even distribution of the die. The rest of the handle holds the reusable cartridge of die, that comes in 40 different shades of color.
One cartridge has both the color and the developer cream that helps the pigments do their work. Those are kept separately until the Colorsonic comes to life; at that point, both substances are mixed in precise amounts for the result desired.
The application is extremely simple. All a user has to do is run the comb bristles through the hair from roots to ends. L’Oreal says the device was manufactured in such a way that leaking, dripping or over-coloring is basically impossible.
After the job is done, users have to wait half an hour before rinsing and styling as desired.
If a cartridge doesn’t fully empty after an application, it can be preserved for touchups and reapplications later on.
Reutilizing the cartridge means less plastic than if you were to buy a DIY box or gloves at every application.
However, we don’t know how much the Colorsonic is going to cost when it ships next year. Will such a purchase make sense for the casual DIYer, or even the frequent one? Remains to be seen.
